Intertidal invertebrates like sea stars must live in two worlds, submerged by high tide and exposed at low. Bottom dwellers, like basket stars, live in strangely stable environment of darkness, pressure and cold. One indicator of the Olympic Coast's productivity is . Spray zone: dampened by ocean spray and high waves and is submerged only during very high tides or severe storms. High intertidal zone: floods during the peaks of daily high tides but remains dry for long stretches between high tides. It is inhabited by hardy sea life that can withstand pounding waves, such as barnacles, marine snails, mussels, limpets, shore .
The intertidal zone is divided into several zones, starting near dry land with the splash zone (supralittoral zone), an area that is usually dry, and moving down to the littoral zone, which is usually underwater. Within the intertidal zone, you’ll find tide pools, puddles left in the rocks as water recedes when the tide goes out. These are. It has four distinct physical subdivisions based on the amount of exposure each gets -- the spray zone, and the high, middle, and lower intertidal zones. The marine waters of the Pacific Northwest support a rich and diverse intertidal marine community, due in part to upwelling currents that bring nutrient-rich waters up to the surface.
Despite the environmental challenges of the intertidal zone, there is a wide diversity of marine life forms that inhabit this ecosystem. Ricketts persevered, collecting thousands of species from the Pacific Rim’s intertidal zones and studying them in his lab in California.
He spent weeks on Clayoquot Island, and wrote about the species he found there in his book Between Pacific Tides (co-written with Jack Calvin). The middle intertidal zone is generally submerged, except for a period during the turn of low tide. More plants and animals live here because they are not exposed to drying conditions for too long.
Low Intertidal Zone. The lower intertidal zone is exposed to air for only a short period of time at low tide. Life here is adapted to conditions. Pacific intertidal life: a guide to organisms of rocky reefs and tide pools of the Pacific Coast from Alaska to Baja California.
